In 2014 James Gunn surprised everyone with a critically lauded, and blockbuster smash hit for Marvel’s ever growing cinematic universe. Full of wit, inventiveness and fun, it was surprising as it was an adaptation of a relatively unknown property. But with an effective marketing campaign playing into that irreverence it took off massively.

Now he returns with Volume 2! And with Doctor Strange about to open Marvel of course are using this as an opportunity to tease their next MCU entry. First we have this wonderful poster:

A great use of monochrome accentuates the general coolness of this poster. Not to mention that dryly sarcastic tagline. The addition of Michael Rooker’s Yondu and Karen Gillen’s Nebula hints at their increased roles in the sequel. Plus can we just talk about that cute Baby Groot. Gunn has already revealed that Groot will stay that way throughout the entire film and I’m sure Marvel are already planning the inevitable plush toys that every child will desire come it’s release date.

James Gunn surprised us all today though with a release of some footage. It isn’t the first trailer though. Merely a sneak peek of some early footage. Showing little, barring the titular Guardians in a series of strange environments and one particularly funny encounter between Drax and Chris Pratt’s Starlord. Plus a nice reveal of Baby Groot in a snazzy little jacket. (Seriously I want a cuddly version now!)

Gunn has emphasised that this isn’t a trailer of a trailer, as Hollywood has become such a fan of, but a separate teaser of footage. My guess is the full trailer will be with Dr Strange in America (we don’t tend to get specific trailers attached over here like what they do) so around Nov 4th or just before expect it to land.

So far the footage is a tantalising tease and based on the word from people who’ve seen the comic-con footage earlier this year it’s going to be even more out there than the first. I love how Marvel have got the confidence now after so many hits to tackle weirder material and trust even more in their directors to deliver something unique.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens May 5th 2017.
